Audion

There was a brief, glorious window of time somewhere in the mid-2000s when there was a strain of aggressive, techy electronic music that had a hard edge but that didn’t spill over into self-parody, the way such things often do. In the same way that I’m spoiled for R&B forever by discovering it when Timbaland and the Neptunes were fighting a scorched-earth battle for the pop charts, Audion ruined me for scathing acid techno with 2005’s “Titty Fuck.” The number of times I tried to mix that track into other things before giving up, the crazy shuffling synth/scythe cutting through all other tunes as though it was hydrochloric acid… Of course eventually the culture took a turn for the brash, and nobody wanted to hear that stuff for a while, myself included. But Matthew Dear has resurrected his alias at what feels like a propitious time – it can’t be a coincidence that Vitalic’s killer remix of Paul Kalkbrenner’s “Altes Kamuffel” announced his return to form at around the same time as Audion dropped “Motormouth.” There really aren’t more than a handful of producers/DJs who can mix sandpaper-like textures with deep, dirty funk so that neither overwhelms the other, and Dear/Audion is one of them. If 2005 was the year of the “Titty Fuck,” in 2014 Audion might just make like Method Man and set your pussy on fire.
